Dhokar Dalna

Ingredients:

  • 200g chana dal (split Bengal gram, soaked overnight)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp cumin powder
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/4 tsp hing (asafoetida)
  • 1 tbsp grated coconut
  • 1 tbsp ginger paste
  • 20g roasted peanuts, chopped
  • 1 tbsp maida (plain flour)
  • 20g vegetable oil
  • 2 tbsp mustard oil

For the gravy:

  • 2 tbsp mustard oil
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 tsp ginger paste
  • 1 tsp garlic paste
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1 tsp cumin powder
  • 1/2 tsp garam masala
  • 1/2 tsp red chili powder
  • 1/2 cup water
  • Salt to taste
  • Sugar to taste
  • 1 tbsp chopped coriander leaves

Instructions:

·        To make the dhoka, drain the chana dal and grind it to a coarse paste. Add the salt, sugar, cumin powder, turmeric powder, hing, coconut, ginger paste, and roasted peanuts. Mix well.

·        Heat the vegetable oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the dal mixture and cook, stirring constantly, for 5-7 minutes, or until the mixture is dry and crumbly.

·        Add the maida and mix well.

·        Spread the mixture out on a plate and let it cool slightly.

·        Cut the mixture into diamond-shaped pieces.

·        Heat the mustard oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the dhoka pieces and fry until golden brown on all sides.

·        To make the gravy, heat the mustard oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the onion and cook until softened.

·        Add the tomatoes, ginger paste, and garlic paste. Cook for 2-3 minutes, or until the tomatoes are soft.

·        Add the turmeric powder, coriander powder, cumin powder, garam masala, and red chili powder. Cook for 1 minute, or until fragrant.

·        Add the water, salt, and sugar. Bring to a boil.

·        Add the dhoka pieces and cook for 5-7 minutes, or until the gravy is thickened.

·        Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot.


Tips:

  • To make the dhoka more flavorful, you can add a few chopped green chilies to the dal mixture.
  • You can also add a few tablespoons of chopped cilantro to the gravy for extra flavor.
  • If you don't have maida, you can use all-purpose flour instead.
  • Serve Dhokar Dalna with hot rice or roti.
